A mollusc living more than 400 million years ago, Orthoceras means 'straight horn'; a nod to it's long, straight horn-like shell. These fossils are what remains of our modern-day squid's ancient ancestor. Orthoceras ranged in size from about a centimetre to an impressive 14 feet long. As squid and their ancestors are predators, we can safely assume that Orthoceras was also a skilled hunter, possibly feasting on trilobites!
