Roaming the oceans as far back as 200 million years ago, these squid-like sea creatures are fossilised relatives of the chambered nautilus shell. The name "ammonite" was inspired by the spiral shape of the fossilised shells, which somewhat resemble tightly coiled rams' horns. It is thought the name derived from the Greek God Ammon, who is typically depicted wearing rams horns.
Ammolite is an iridescent, opal-like organic gemstone which, if the conditions are just right, is created from the fossilised shells of ammonites. It is primarily found along the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains of North America. As delicate as it is beautiful, Ammolite can come in any colour in the rainbow but most are green and red. Blue and violet are rarer and generally more valuable.
